Distance: Approx 70km
Course Description:
Today's ride takes you from a highpoint of 1900m in the Mgeni Vlei area (headwaters of the Mgeni) to an elevation of around 1350m… though be warned, its not all downhill! The terrain will comprise mainly jeep track, old farm and forestry roads. Lookout for the endemic blue and wattle cranes as you cycle through the expansive Mgeni vlei, before winding your way through the working farm of Ivanhoe and an exhilarating 1km descent from the escarpment top down to Fort Nottingham. From here, we'll cycle across private farmland, connecting through to some superb singletrack created by the Michaelhouse MTB Race track designers. After a thrilling and technical (in parts) descent to Balgowan, there's one more small hill in store before reaching Terlings Guestfarm or Beaconvlei – your overnight stop. Enjoy the Views of the Kamberg mountain, and Giants Peak on many parts of today's ride.
Overnight: Terlings or Beaconvlei Guestfarm
Catering: Breakfast, Trail Lunch & 2-Course Dinner all included
Day 2 Cycle: Balgowan – Howick
Terlings/Beaconvlei Guest Farm – Howick (Yellowood Café)
ROUTE A : Approx 41km
ROUTE B: Approx 60km
Course Description:
Flush out yeterday's lactic acid with a long but moderate climb from Balgowan up to the Curry's Post on a winding country road. From the Curry's Post escarpment, we connect onto the Karkloof Classic Route with an exhilarating 8km descent of flowing singletrack, down into the beautiful Karkloof Valley. A short, steep ascent takes you up towards the fire-tower: launchpad to the highly acclaimed Howick singletrack. Befriend the rocks and surmount the bridges as you tackle this 10km thrilling descent.
After this an adrenaline rush, you may be ready to settle in for a pint, but should you be begging for more (the group may split at this point), we can take you home via a detour with a view. Connecting through Everdon Avo Estate, we'll cross a river and get onto the Black Eagle Trail in Umgeni Nature Reserve. Enjoy a birds eye view of the indigenous canopy, and game running wild in the Umgeni Valley, whilst you cycle amongst the ficus and wild flowers along a contoured ridge.
